Kevin Rivera joined Walsh Colucci in 2021 and works in the firm’s Land Use & Zoning practice group out of the Prince William County office. Prior to joining the firm, Kevin worked as a trial attorney for a personal injury firm and as an attorney volunteer for the Earth Law Center. He also worked as a research assistant for William & Mary Law School’s Virginia Coastal Policy Center and as a law clerk for Earthjustice’s Miami office. Kevin is a member of the Virginia State Bar, Colorado State Bar, and the American Bar Association.
In this month’s Employee Spotlight, we will learn a lot more about Kevin.
Tell us a little about yourself — where did you grow up?
I’m originally from New Jersey and I grew up about 30 minutes outside of New York City. I have also spent time living in Miami, Lynchburg, and Williamsburg, and I now reside in Arlington.
What did you want to be when you were younger?
When I was younger, I wanted to be a paleontologist. I was obsessed with anything and everything dinosaur related, and used to scour National Geographic magazines for paleontological articles. I can’t say it’s something that I have completely grown out of, and I still make a beeline to the dinosaur exhibit whenever I visit a museum.
What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most?
It’s rewarding to watch a vision for a project on a piece of property come to life. The Land Use and Zoning practice is unique because you are involved in the process of shaping communities across Northern Virginia.
Aside from a very busy schedule, what do you like to do for fun?
Outside of work I enjoy reading, running, hiking, and spending time with my fiancé and our amazing dog. The more time spent outside, the better.
What is one thing about you few people know?
One thing that not many people know about me is that for whatever reason, I have a knack for finding shark teeth. I once filled up a yogurt container with shark teeth during a single week at the beach. Naturally, it makes me a little wary of swimming out very far in the ocean.
Favorite place(s) to travel to?
I have a long list of places that I intend to visit, but so far my favorite has been Costa Rica. I also really enjoy traveling to New York and Savannah, which are a little easier to get to.
Favorite book?
I have read a lot of really great books, but my favorite right now is probably The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt.
Why do you think makes Walsh, Colucci, Lubeley & Walsh is a great place to work?
Walsh Colucci has done a fantastic job of hiring a talented and effective team that is also really great to work with.
Thank you for participating!
